Magnetorheologics
The RHEO KNEE® uses magnetic fields very effectively to vary flexion resistance. From firm and unyielding support when standing, to light and free movement when turning a corner or walking on confined spaces, response is exceptionally smooth and fast.
At the heart of the system is an advanced actuator which uses Magnetorheological fluid (MR fluid) and rotary blades to vary the knee’s resistance throughout each and every step. The MR fluid contains miniscule iron particles. When a magnetic field is applied, these particles start to form chains and resistance increases. The stronger the magnetic field, the stronger the resistance.
So, the data amassed by the RHEO KNEE’s sensor technology is processed by the artificial intelligence, which in turn directs the MR fluid actuator to consistently and accurately deliver appropriate resistance.
And unlike existing hydraulic systems the resistance offered by MR fluid is customized, activated only when the individual needs it, allowing more natural, smooth motion with walking effort reduced to a minimum. It is also activated instantly. The zero-pressure system means that the device can alter from full resistance to free swing in just 0.001 second.
