Artificial proprioception

The artificial intelligence – or artificial proprioception - is the ‘brains’ behind the POWER KNEE™, replacing the function that the body’s central nervous system would normally play in processing information about changes occuring inside and outside the limb if it was still intact.

This advanced form of artificial intelligence allows the knee to think for itself, to process the data derived from the sensors and to anticipate and initiate the required function. Having detected the type of activity the user is engaged in – walking up a slope or some stairs, for example – the POWER KNEE’s artificial intelligence is able to generate the appropriate prosthetic function, providing the precise amount of power necessary to do so.

The system also assesses gait symmetry and consequently stimulates highly efficient gait patterns, helping to minimize strain on the back, hips and sound leg. The software in the APM can be fine-tuned according to the personal physical condition and rehabilitation level of individual users.
